Parents as Teachers (PAT) is a voluntary early childhood home visiting program that offers research-based curricula to promote children’s development, learning, and health by supporting and engaging their parents and caregivers.
PAT partnered with AGP to create a web-based platform to host their curricula and resources. To help PAT better serve their diverse audience of parent educators and families, AGP built an AI-powered translation solution that makes multilingual content scalable, consistent, and manageable without overwhelming staff or compromising quality.
The Challenge
PAT serves a diverse population. Educators and families often require content in different languages, creating several challenges:
- The PAT team wanted the user experience on their new platform to support multiple languages.
- Manual translation workflows did not scale, especially as content volume increased.
- Introducing a new language risked broken navigation, untranslated UI elements, and mismatched internal links.
- Content teams needed speed from machine translation without losing the ability to apply their own editorial judgment.
- PAT’s curriculum covers specialized parenting and early childhood development topics requiring precise, audience-appropriate language — something generic machine translation alone could not reliably deliver.
- Prior to working with AGP, the curriculum only existed in a PDF that was long and tedious to update and manage. There wasn’t a web-based option for this material for families and parent educators to easily use.
PAT needed a solution that balanced automation with control and could expand from an initial language set to many more over time.
The Solution: An AI Translation System Built for Growth
AGP built a custom AI Translator integrated directly into the WordPress CMS. The system is powered by Azure AI Translation services and trained using PAT-specific documents and glossaries, ensuring translations reflect program terminology and tone and not generic machine output. This solution was designed to:
- Launch quickly with a small number of languages
- Scale predictably to many more languages
- Support both content translation and web app UI translation
- Preserve editorial governance

How the AI Translation Works
1. AI That Understands PAT’s Language
Rather than relying on out-of-the-box machine translation alone, the AI translator is trained with PAT-related materials and glossaries. This allows the system to:
- Maintain consistent translations for curriculum terms and program-specific language
- Reduce repetitive manual corrections
- Improve translation quality as more content is processed
Editors can always override AI-generated translations with professionally refined versions, ensuring quality remains high where precision matters most.
2. Content Translation at Scale
The AI Translator supports both single-item and bulk translation workflows:
- Translate individual pages or resources directly from the content editor
- Run bulk translations across large sets of content
- Skip content already translated by default, or intentionally retranslate when updates are required
- Automatically publish translations or save them as drafts for review
This allows PAT to translate large amounts of content efficiently while keeping humans in control of final output.
3. Web App UI and Navigation Translation
Beyond content, the AI Translator handles user interface elements, including taxonomy terms, menu labels, and navigation structures. A deliberate translation sequence ensures that UI elements always point to the correct translated content, preventing broken navigation and mixed-language experiences. This sequence ensures that every translated UI element references existing translated content—critical when scaling from 2 languages to 10 or more.

4. Queue-Based Processing for Performance and Reliability
All AI translation jobs run through a background translation queue, allowing PAT to translate large volumes of content without impacting site performance.
Administrators can:
- Start translation jobs immediately or allow them to process in batches
- Retry failed jobs caused by temporary API issues
- Monitor progress across languages
- Review and clear completed jobs for easier oversight

The Results
With AGP’s AI translation system in place, Parents as Teachers now has:
- A scalable multilingual platform
- Faster translation of both content and UI elements
- Consistent terminology across curriculum, navigation, and interface text
- A repeatable, low-risk process for introducing new languages
- An AI-powered solution that supports growth without increasing administrative burden
By treating translation as a core platform capability and not an afterthought, PAT is positioned to serve more educators and families, in more languages, with confidence.
The AGP team worked to understand our specific needs around site translation and to find a scalable solution. We look forward to leveraging these tools to increase language accessibility for the professionals we support.
